Top 5 entertainment options on the Conroe stage this weekend

1. Montgomery County Choral Society

The Montgomery County Choral Society kicks off its 51st season tonight with its “Pillars of Song” concert at First Methodist Conroe at 7:30. This performance is dedicated to celebrating choral traditions. Tickets can be purchased online, at the member’s or at the door. $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $5 for students.

The singing group was formed in September 1971 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the 2021-22 season. The season’s opening also marks the first concert by new artistic director Sandy Hinkley.

Hinckley has taught middle and high schools in Florida for 20 years. In 2017, Hinkley joined Sam Houston State University as the Associate Director of Choral Activities and Music Education Coordinator.

Hinckley’s love of community choir began early, when she conducted the Tallahassee Civic Choir during her undergraduate degree.

“I look forward to creating music with this resilient and extraordinary group of people,” Hinckley said. “There are many exciting opportunities in the Conroe art world.”

Following the fall opening ceremony, a holiday choral concert is scheduled for December 15th at First Methodist Conroe.

2. Players are “barefoot in the park”

Director Kailey Johnson couldn’t say enough about the orchestra’s chemistry in The Players Theater Company’s “Barefoot in the Park” opening tonight at the Irving Theater.

“The cast is outstanding. Their chemistry is evident on stage. We have two new actors — Maggie Taylor and Jill Lynton,” Johnson said. “Everyone’s personalities blend well offstage. Outside of rehearsal time, they spend a lot of time helping each other with their lines. This cast really is a team.”

Neil Simon’s rom-com is the second gig of the player’s season. After kicking off tonight, the show will continue in Irvine on the weekend of November 6th.

The show focuses on newlyweds — Paul and Corey — who are as mismatched as Paul is a conservative lawyer and Corey is a lively free spirit.

The cast of players “Barefoot in the Park” includes – Michael Hayes as Phone Repairman; Katt Gilcrease as Victor Velasco; Corie Bratter as Jill Linton ) played; Paul Bratt is played by John Kenward and Mother or Mrs Banks is played by Maggie Taylor.

“Gill and John’s performances of Corey and Paul are amazing together on stage,” Johnson said. “When I watch their scenes, it feels like I’m watching two people I’ve known for a long time. They’re meticulous about their characters and work really hard on character development. Their comedic timing is also amazing.”

3. Stage Right presents “RENT”

Creighton Theater’s resident troupe Texas is on the right side of tonight’s stage, opening “Rent.”

The show will then run through the weekend until November 6th.

Jonathan Larson’s Rent, loosely based on Puccini’s “The Bohemian,” follows a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create on New York’s Lower East Side in the shadow of HIV/AIDS. year.

The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through the performing arts; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold his bohemian ideals for a lucrative income and came out with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider in general. How these young bohemians negotiated their dreams, love and conflict provides the narrative thread for this groundbreaking musical.

The cast includes Roger – Mike Kilgore; Mark – Cameron Collier; Collins – R. Isaiah Owens; Angel – Colton Land; Benny – Ellen MacFarlane; Maureen – Shananda Poulos; Joanne-Chelsea Stewart and Mimi will still be announced when the cast is released.

4. Dear.Sleepy Reverend Ray in Pacific Yard

Former Conroe City Councilman Raymond MacDonald, aka Hon. Rev. Sleepy Ray will return to Pacific Yard House on Saturday at 9pm for a night of gospel blues and rock ‘n’ roll.

His music was inspired by “Asleep on Wheels”, “The Fabulous Thunderbird” and his good friend Dwight Yuckham. MacDonald met Yoakam in Hollywood as both musicians were on track in the 1980s.

McDonald’s inspiration even goes back to his childhood growing up in East Houston.

As the only white family in the black community, MacDonald was admired for blues, soul and Motown music. He has posters of BB King and similar artists on his walls.

He attended Texas A&M University to study engineering, but was so vocal about music that he and his brother Bobby moved to Hollywood to make a name for themselves in the music industry. After playing in bands in California for a few years, he longed for his Texas roots and came to the Conroe area.

He started Vineyard Church in Conroe, where he continues to serve as a pastor.

In 2018, the album “Jesus Be Famous” was released.

5. 202 Main host Winston Cook

The Pacific Yard House in downtown Conroe hosted Houston artist Winston Cook at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Cook is an American singer-songwriter influenced by alternative, rock, indie and folk genres. During his formative years, he started as a classically trained musician, eventually switching to guitar and beginning to develop his songwriting skills.

His lyrics strive for emotional depth and subtly poetic, while the arrangement throughout the band maintains the climactic, melodic and symphonic qualities he learned in his early years as a musician.

From his classical upbringing to his eclectic mix of influences, Cook’s music is sure to surprise in every way, from subtle intimacy to powerful vocal performances.
