Top Organizations Setting Global Recycling Standards

[ad_1]

BEEAH Group, the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) and management consultancy Roland Berger have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a ground-breaking global standard for waste recycling, which has been approved by the UAE Climate Accreditation of the Ministry of Change and the Environment (MoCCaE).

The MoU was signed by BEEAH Group Chief Marketing Officer Firas Wahbeh, ISWA President Carlos RV Silva and Roland Berger Dubai Managing Partner Hani Tohme.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Essa Abdulrahman Al Hashmi, Assistant Undersecretary, Sustainable Communities Sector, Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, UAE, and Rahma Alshamsi, Head of Energy Transition Team, COP28 Committee, UAE Climate Envoy.

A statement said the platform would create a global market-based incentive scheme and standard measures of recycling recognition and rewards, which would bridge the gap between the global sustainability agenda and the private sector and facilitate the transition to a global circular economy.

Developed using blockchain technology, the platform aims to facilitate cooperation between jurisdictions and enable transparency across the waste management value chain.

The dedicated marketplace, to be unveiled during the upcoming 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), will connect waste producers and waste management providers to create a virtuous circle.

Voluntary recycling credits (VRCs) are awarded to organizations that recycle their waste with a verified sustainable waste management provider. It said the use of the platform enabled them to track recycling activities in a transparent and standardized process and contributed to their sustainability goals.

The statement noted that the landmark Memorandum of Understanding was signed during the second session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-2) held in Paris by the United Nations Environment Programme.

Khaled Al Huraimel, CEO of BEEAH Group, said: “BEEAH Group has been working tirelessly to achieve a zero-waste-to-landfill future, which we believe is closely linked to the achievement of the UAE’s 2050 Net Zero Strategic Initiative and the wider sustainability agenda. We “Proud to be working with MoCCaE, ISWA and Roland Berger on the VRC platform, which will enable us to create new, sustainable efficiencies across businesses and industries in waste management. This new recycling standard will have significant impact on sustainable Sustainable Development Goals have a positive impact. While encouraging recycling and having a large-scale impact on creating a circular economy, we are also innovating to add new value to organizations that manage waste sustainably, enabling them to offset emissions and track their contribution to contribution to the national sustainable development agenda.”

Known for its zero waste strategy and sustainability-driven technologies, BEEAH Group’s integrated waste management and clean energy strategies have set records in the Middle East for waste collection and landfill waste diversion. Recently, BEEAH Group increased the diversion rate of waste from landfill in the Emirate of Sharjah from 76% (through sustainable waste management and material recovery) to over 90% through the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy Plant, a joint venture with Masdar.

During COP26 in Glasgow, the UAE became the first country in the Middle East to announce its 2050 Net Zero Strategy initiative. The following year, during COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, the UAE also unveiled its pathway to net-zero emissions by 2050. The VRC standard was developed ahead of COP28 in Dubai to help drive the UAE’s climate ambitions and serve as a new global model to accelerate net-zero emissions while creating a circular economy.

In March 2023, the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlighted that contributions from the waste management sector could reduce CO2 emissions by 1.8 Gt (gigatons) per year. This can be achieved through innovation across the waste management value chain and limiting the use of resources to manufacture virgin materials such as plastics.

“Actions need to be integrated and to deliver coherent solutions. Today, I am delighted to announce the launch of a new global initiative, driven by the UAE and our partners BEEAH and Roland Berger, which will be present at INC-2 in Paris The topics discussed linking plastic pollution to climate change will be negotiated during COP28 in Dubai,” said ISWA President Carlos RV Silva.

Driven by MoCCaE’s strategy and the vision of the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategic initiative, the standard will bring together BEEAH Group’s expertise in waste management, sustainability and digitalisation, ISWA’s capabilities and large-scale impact on the global circular economy As well as Roland Berger’s leadership statement in developing circular economy solutions for climate change mitigation, enabling innovative technologies and alliances.

Hani Tohme, Managing Partner at Roland Berger Dubai, said: “For the first time in history, the waste management industry is delivering a scalable solution to reduce carbon emissions, track material flows and create a self-sustaining financing system to upcycle recycling infrastructure globally. The Innovation Alliance formed under UAE leadership is driving this ambition, bringing together all the necessary expertise to make a huge contribution to the Paris Agreement. We look forward to focusing on waste management at COP28 this year and showcasing the industry untapped emission reduction potential.”

The partnership is currently developing the framework and technology for the standard. The platform will be unveiled at COP28 in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December 2023. – trade arab news agency
