A suspect has been detained following the attack in the city of Sindelfingen in the south of the country.
Two people were killed in a shooting at a Mercedes Benz plant in Germany, the automaker said.
A spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in the nearby city of Stuttgart said a 53-year-old suspect was in custody after the shooting in Sindelfingen.
One person was killed and another was seriously injured, the force said earlier. It was not immediately clear whether the injured person was the second employee killed.
Mercedes said those involved in the shooting were employed by an outside service provider.
Police received the first emergency calls at around 7.45am local time (6.45am UK time) on Thursday morning, a police spokesman told German news agency dpa.
The suspect’s motive is unclear.
Police earlier tweeted: “Currently a police operation is taking place inside the factory. Police and rescue personnel are on duty.
“There is no danger to the public.”
Mercedes-Benz had earlier confirmed an incident in Sindelfingen and had contacted the authorities.
In a statement, the company said: “We are contacting the authorities and trying to clarify the facts.
“Employee safety comes first.”
The sprawling Sindelfingen plant employs around 35,000 workers and makes the E- and S-class luxury sedans as well as the CLS and GLC coupes, according to the company’s website. It also houses planning, procurement, development and design departments.
