January 31 (United Press International) — The U.S. Treasury Department has designated individuals and entities linked to Myanmar’s military junta for sanctions. The operation was coordinated with the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.

The operation comes two years after a military coup toppled the government in the country’s former name Myanmar.

“On February 1, 2021, the Burmese military overthrew the democratically elected government, removing power from civilian government leaders, including the president. win min and State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi“, read Press release Tuesday from Treasury.

“Over the past two years, the military has continued to use violence and oppression to deprive the Burmese people of their ability to choose their own leaders. The Ministry of Finance has designated members of the junta and its allies. Tun Aung, the current commander of the country’s air force, who succeeded General Maung Khuaw last year, has been appointed.

Individuals and entities linked to Myanmar’s energy export sector have also been designated. Tuesday’s action named Energy Minister Myo Myint Oo and Aung Min and Than Min, the managing and deputy directors of the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise.

“Two years after the Burmese military forcibly overthrew Burma’s democratically elected government, the United States, along with partner countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, continue to stand with the Burmese people in their quest for freedom and democracy,” he said.
