Over the weekend, volunteers from the UAE joined a “We Stand Together” initiative to provide flood-affected families in Pakistan with 1,200 tonnes of food, healthcare and general hygiene supplies in 30,000 kits within four hours. The initiative was launched by a coalition of 12 humanitarian organizations.
Community volunteering took place at three locations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. The initiative was launched by the Emirates Red Crescent Society (ERC), Dubai Cares and Sharjah International Charities in close coordination with the UAE Ministry of Community Development (MoCD) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC), and was supported by nine other UAE humanitarian organisations .
Flooding from record monsoon rains affected 33 million people and killed nearly 1,400 people, including nearly 500 children. Catastrophic floods have destroyed lives, washed out roads and infrastructure, destroyed more than a million homes and crops, killed livestock and destroyed livelihoods. Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said the economic damage from floods in the country could exceed $40 billion.
The UAE is one of the first countries to respond to humanitarian crises by providing emergency support to affected populations. Since August 28, the UAE has dispatched 37 flights and a boat to deliver much-needed food, medical supplies and tents to flood-affected communities, according to Pakistan’s foreign ministry. The UAE embassy said: “A UAE aid vessel carrying more than 18 containers of 2,750 tonnes of food, medical and relief items arrives at Karachi’s Qasim port for humanitarian situation of some 140,000 Pakistani families affected by the floods. emergency support.”
The King Salman Center for Humanitarian Aid and Relief (KSrelief) launched a large-scale relief airlift from Saudi Arabia on the instructions of King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, through 10 An aid plane provides emergency aid to flood victims in Pakistan.
The first two planes will take off from King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on September 13, carrying 180 tonnes of food, medical and shelter assistance, KSrelief Chief Supervisor Dr Al Rabeeah said. The first tranche of relief will benefit 19,000 people, he said. The aid planes are in addition to a relief land convoy launched within Pakistan in coordination with the Saudi embassy. “Convoys are delivering shelter, food and medical aid, which will be distributed to affected areas.”
KSRelief also launched a public campaign in Saudi Arabia to raise funds for flood victims in Pakistan. People in Saudi Arabia are being urged to donate through the “Sahem” app or website, or deposit money into a bank account at the center.
As many as 83 international aid flights have arrived in Pakistan, bringing tons of much-needed supplies to millions of people affected by devastating monsoon rains and floods.
