UAE: Announces over AED 5 million in grants for winning rain enhancement research proposal – News

The UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science is calling on researchers to submit for the program’s fifth cycle, which offers grants of up to $1.5 million (Dh5.511 million). The grant will be allocated to each winning research proposal over a three-year period.

During the 6th International Rain Enhancement Forum (IREF), Alya Al Mazroui, Director of the UAE Research Program on Rain Enhancement Science, in his opening address, announced that Cycle 5 of the program welcomes innovative research proposals focusing on two high priority areas : Enhance cloud formation and increase rainfall.

Leading experts, researchers and scientists from around the world gathered at a forum in Abu Dhabi to discuss the latest scientific and technological advances in rainfall enhancement research.

The International Rain Enhancement Forum (IREF) kicked off on Tuesday at the Conrad Abu Dhabi Hotel at the Etihad Towers, the first-of-its-kind event aimed at addressing pressing water and sustainable development issues around the world.

Al Mazroui said: “With the participation of many outstanding scientists and researchers from top research institutions around the world, today we are announcing a call for submissions for the program’s 5th cycle to continue building on its impressive achievements and results. We are delighted that this The program has succeeded in delivering new theoretical and practical solutions that have enabled many countries in the region and globally to develop dedicated rainfall enhancement programs to ensure sustainable alternatives to groundwater supplies.”

Proposal registration for cycle 5 of the program is open until March 9, 2023, and pre-proposals should be submitted by March 16, 2023. Those invited to submit a full proposal will be notified by May 26, 2023 and asked to send their full proposal by August 24, 2023.

Winning projects will be selected through a rigorous two-stage judging process and winners will be announced in January 2024. Winners will receive grants of up to $1.5 million, spread over three years, with an annual maximum of $550 K for each awarded research initiative.

International Precipitation Forum

Organized by the National Center for Meteorology (NCM) through the UAE Scientific Research Program for Rain Enhancement (UAEREP), the event runs until January 26 and is organized around five strategic pillars, including collaboration, innovation, capacity building, artificial intelligence and applied research.

In a keynote speech by Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in the Presidency said: “The UAE continues to deliver a commitment to put innovation at the heart of its governmental, scientific and economic agenda components to support global environmental goals, especially those related to climate change and water security.

“As our country prepares to host key decision-makers and policymakers at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP 28), we have recently launched several ambitious initiatives, plans and strategies that will cement the UAE as the most dynamic and status as one of the most active nations. Nations committed to the principles of environmental sustainability.”

He added: “Given the growing challenges facing our environment, climate and scarce water resources, the scientific community deserves everyone’s appreciation and recognition for its tireless efforts to enhance water security and enhance the sustainability of global water resources , these are our top priorities. Global, regional and local agendas. Through this unique global forum dedicated to the science of rainfall enhancement, we reaffirm our full support for the efforts of the scientific community to advance this promising field and provide Sustained alternatives to replenish groundwater reserves in arid and semi-arid regions. Sheikh Mansour pointed to the UAE Rain Enhancement Science Research Program as a notable example of the UAE’s aspirations to become a global center for advancing the global water security agenda, as evidenced by the achievements of the programme’s winning projects over the past four cycles .
