SHARJAH 24 – WAM: The United Arab Emirates announced $20 million (AED73.6 million) for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The agency provides education, health care, relief and social services to Palestine refugees. It is financed almost entirely by contributions from UN member states.
Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, announced the UAE’s contribution during the meeting of the General Assembly’s Ad Hoc Committee to Announce Voluntary Contributions to UNRWA, which will be disbursed over the next two years.
“UNRWA’s current financial situation is precarious, and the future of the agency hangs in the balance. Through the UAE’s support, we aim to provide more predictable and consistent funding for the Agency,” said Ambassador Nusseibeh. “UNRWA not only plays a vital role in improving the lives of millions of Palestine refugees, but also contributes to maintaining regional security and stability,” she added.
Prior to today’s contribution, the UAE’s aid to Palestine through UNRWA totaled US$521 million during 2018-2023, of which US$119.3 million.
UNRWA was established on 8 December 1949 by UN General Assembly Resolution 302.
