The UAE Cabinet meeting has approved 78 environmental projects and initiatives to be implemented by the UAE in preparation for hosting COP28 in Dubai Expo City in November.
The 78 initiatives include national strategies to reduce carbon emissions and regulate the use of solar products, sustainable tourism, and other initiatives to support sustainable and environmentally friendly development.
The UAE was the first GCC member to develop a national climate strategy in 2017 and the first to commit to net zero by 2050.
ADNOC, the UAE’s largest oil exporter, has allocated $15 billion for decarbonization projects, including carbon capture, electrification, and new CO2-absorbing technologies.
By hosting COP28, the UAE hopes the summit will provide practical solutions to help people adapt to climate change and combat the growing impacts of climate change.
At COP21 in Paris in 2015, the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees was adopted.
“We’ve just passed the seven-year mark since the Paris Agreement, and we’re only seven years away from 2030. There’s seven years to cut emissions by 43% and keep the Paris Agreement’s ambition and target,” Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE President-elect at COP28, told the 14th Petersburg Climate Dialogue in Berlin.
Al Jaber, who is also ADNOC’s chief executive, has consistently reiterated the need to phase out fossil fuel emissions while focusing on viable and affordable zero-carbon alternatives.
