LONDON: Tributes have been paid to British Conservative MP Sir David Ames, who was murdered in his constituency during a meeting with the public a year after his death.
Amess, a father of five who has been an MP for more than four decades, was stabbed in the Essex town of Leigh-on-Sea on October 15, 2021.

Priti Patel MP, Home Secretary at the time of Sir David’s murder, said: “One year ago today, my dear friend Sir David Ames was murdered. David was an excellent public servant, full of goodness , dynamism and integrity. He was killed serving the public in a senseless attack on democracy.”
Labour MP Joe Cox, whose husband Brendan Cox was shot dead by a far-right gunman during a meeting with voters in 2016, paid tribute to Sir David.
Cox tweeted: “David Ames was killed a year ago while trying to help his constituents. A lot has happened in our politics since then, but for his family , everything is like yesterday.
“The sadness, pain and shock will remain overwhelming. They deserve all the support and goodwill we can give.”
Sir David’s Essex hometown of Southend became a city in October 2021 in honour of the late MP, who was posthumously awarded the first free man in March this year.
A campaign is underway to make the city the next city of British culture in his memory again. “There is no better legacy than us to live out his dream to be not just a city, but a city of culture,” his successor, Anna Firth MP, told the BBC.
