“It’s good to see United Arab Emirates Indian tea is now being imported heavily. This bodes well for exporters, as it is a major consumer of high-quality orthodox varieties,” says an exporter.
Apart from Iraq, exports to Iran, another major buyer, have also been affected due to economic sanctions imposed by the US and Iranian importers not picking up their shipments due to failure to issue invoices to Indian exporters.
Exports to the Commonwealth of Independent States have also struggled due to logistical problems affecting the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, exporters said.
In the nine months from January to September 2022, India’s total tea exports will be 165.58 million kilograms, which is higher than the 142.55 million kilograms in the same period in 2021.
The Indian Tea Association (ITA), the growers’ peak body, forecasts that India’s tea exports will reach 230 million kilograms by 2022, compared with 196 million kilograms in 2021.
The tea industry is also eyeing the Chinese market to increase exports as China is the country with the highest consumption of tea.
