Question: I have some black spots on my UAE driver’s license. Can you explain what happens if I hit the limit of 24 points? Is there any way to reduce points?

Reply: As per your enquiry, as you wish to reduce ‘black traffic spots’ marked on UAE driving licences due to traffic violations, Ministerial Resolution No. (178) 2017 on Traffic Control Rules and Procedures (‘Ministerial Resolution’ ) can refer to.

In the UAE, anyone with a valid driving license is required to comply with all relevant traffic rules and regulations. Traffic violations by UAE driving license holders are governed by a ministerial decision, which contains rules on the “black traffic spot” system. Accordingly, for serious crimes, black points from 4 to 24 may be imposed.

Black points are essentially negative points imposed on individuals for violations including, but not limited to, speeding, drink driving, reckless driving, reckless driving causing injury or death or causing an accident. The maximum threshold for such scores for any driver’s license holder is 24.

If a person accumulates 24 black points, the competent traffic court in the relevant emirate can order the suspension or confiscation of the driving license for a period of time. For certain traffic offences, the traffic court may order the forfeiture of the vehicle even if the black point is below 24.

Driving licence holders may seek deductions by participating in relevant traffic awareness/road safety programmes organised by each emirate police department/other authority from time to time. For more information, you can contact the competent transport/road authority in your emirate.
