On the eve of International Labor Day 2023, more than 1,000 senior employees and department heads volunteered to cook a variety of Asian and Arabic cuisines and serve more than 7,000 frontline and blue-collar colleagues at their residences on Sunday.

About 1,200 employees and their families were involved in organizing, preparing and serving the meals, said EFS Group CEO Tariq Chauhan.

“The goal is to welcome anyone who wants to cook and bring food for colleagues. I did chicken qorma for 300 people. Likewise, other senior managers were involved in preparing and serving biryanis, burgers, fries, etc.” Chauhan said.

On Sundays, each table is assigned to a senior member and his or her family to care for and serve dinner to the staff.

In addition, the company’s managers provided meals to some 300 frontline women workers in Jebel Ali and 2,000 workers in Abu Dhabi.

Sana Ahmed, business development manager at EFS, with the help of her son Aryan, 11, and daughter Aisha, 8, prepared vegetable biryani, potato gravy and salad for about 20 people and served them to their colleagues.

“It was an amazing and totally different experience. The kids were also happy to see and be served by the EFS staff,” said Ahmed, an Indian national.

Lebanese citizen Najwa Makhlouf, who heads EFS’s service assurance team, prepares malooba, an Arabic dish, for her 40 blue-collar colleagues.

“The planning and preparations started about two weeks ago as we had too many accommodations in the UAE to take care of. It was the first dinner for blue collar and frontline workers and everyone loved it, the food was great and it was satisfying . We are tired, but excited to be part of this movement,” Makhlouf said.

Dr. Aman Puri said that International Labor Day is a time to celebrate the hard work, prosperity and camaraderie of all workers from different countries living and working in the UAE in peace and happiness away from their families.

“Not only are they supporting in terms of remittances, but they are also helping families to a great extent. We really value their hard work and contribution to the economy,” he said, adding that EFS has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Skills Development Corporation , to ensure that more and more skilled and well-trained manpower from India can find jobs in the UAE.

“We are working with stakeholders in India to upskill workers who will then come here for employment,” Dr Aman told Khaleej Times on the sidelines of Sunday’s event.
