Abu Dhabi is gearing up to host the Lion King’s Abu Dhabi limited season at the Etihad Arena from 16 November to 10 December, with jaw-dropping musical performances and award-winning costumes.
Before the show hits town, the team at Proactiv Entertainment, the international event organizer responsible for bringing The Lion King to the region, shared five fun facts that even the show’s biggest fans might not know.
1. To recreate the animal-like movements, more than 200 puppets – stick puppets, shadow puppets and full-scale puppets – were used throughout the performance, which took a total of 37,000 hours to complete. The tallest animal puppets used in the show are the four 5.5m exotic giraffes in I Just Can’t Wait to Be King, while the two giraffes in The Ring of Life are slightly shorter at 4.3m. The two actors were trained to walk on stilts and climb ladders to get used to the puppets, then climbed onto the stilts and walked across the stage. The smallest animal puppet is the trick rat at the end of the scar cane, measuring just 12cm.
2. More than 25 species of animals, birds, fish and insects appear throughout the exhibit. These include 39 hyenas and a whopping 52 wildebeests, making them the most striking animals at the show. Eagle-eyed guests can also catch glimpses of elephants, cheetahs, zebras and antelope.
3. While the international programming has been translated into eight languages ​​including Japanese and Spanish, the script itself includes six indigenous African languages ​​that have not yet been translated. These languages ​​include Swahili, Zulu, Sotho, Tswana, Congo and the click language Xhosa. For those familiar with the phrase “hakuna matata” (don’t worry), congratulations – you already know two Swahili words.
4. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, The Lion King has received more than 70 major awards, including six at the 1998 Tony Award. In winning the award for Best Director of a Musical, Julie Taymor became the first woman to win the award.
5. The most complex set was Pride Rock, which appeared five times per show. Huge, ancient rock formations are located in the vast Pride Lands, and Pride Rock is one of the key scenes in the story.
