Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has approved the first national permit of its kind, allowing autonomous vehicles to operate on its roads.
The decision was approved by a cabinet meeting chaired by the UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, on Monday.
Al Maktoum wrote on his official Twitter: “Today, at the Council of Ministers, we approved the National Policy on Electric Vehicles, which includes building a national electric vehicle charging network, regulating the electric vehicle market, and stimulating related industries. Ensure the reduction of emissions , energy consumption and maintain the quality of roads that the UAE enjoys.”
He added: “We also approved today at the Council of Ministers the first national license for self-driving cars on the country’s roads, which has been awarded to the specialist WeRide company.”
Its corporate headquarters are in Guangzhou, China, with centers in Abu Dhabi and other cities, according to its website. It conducts autonomous driving research and operations in more than 26 cities around the world.
The license was awarded to WeRide, guaranteeing them the opportunity to test autonomous vehicles on UAE roads.
Level 4 autonomous driving
WeRide provides software and hardware solutions for Level 4 autonomous driving innovation.
Level 4 is considered fully independent driving, where the vehicle actually has a cockpit, although the human driver can claim control in any situation. At Level 4, the vehicle can handle most driving situations autonomously.
WeRide provides products such as Robotaxi, Robobus, Robovan, Robosweeper and Advanced Driving Arrangement, which are an important part of the product lineup that provides intelligent services for on-demand transportation, online car-hailing, urban collaborative operation and management services, its website status .
Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Center (ITC) announced on June 29 that visitors to Saadiyat and Yas Islands can enjoy free self-driving vehicles as part of its Eid holiday.
“The service was initially piloted on Yas Island in November 2021, ensuring high-quality journeys and safety,” the ITC said.
