The UAE’s first diabetes challenge, announced on Thursday, will see participants win cash prizes of up to Dh5,000 for lifestyle changes. The challenge, initiated by RAK Hospital in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and Prevention, aims to reduce disease biomarkers, especially HbA1c levels and BMI, in diabetic patients, “and thereby reduce the risk of associated complications”.

During the 12-week challenge, which begins on September 24 and ends on December 20, participants will be assessed twice: once at the beginning and then at the end of the three months. They will receive a lifestyle score based on their lifestyle habits, including exercise frequency, eating habits and physical activity levels.

The winner will be selected by a jury. They will be assessed based on active lifestyle changes, improved BMI, and reduced HbA1C.

Male and female players will form separate categories. The top three winners in the ‘Entity’ category will receive cash prizes worth AED 5,000, AED 3,000 and AED 2,000 respectively. The top three winners in the “Virtual” category will receive RAK Hospital Gift Certificates and other sponsored prizes.

The other top 10 male and female participants will receive a free RAK Hospital Swiss Health Screening Voucher and other prizes. The first 100 participants will receive a certificate.

Registration for the competition begins today (September 15th) and will run until September 25th. More than 5,000 people are expected to take part in the challenge.

How to enter the competition

The competition is specifically aimed at people with diabetes and prediabetes. Only individuals with an HbA1c of 5.7 and above are eligible to compete for the award.

Participants in both categories will first need to register on the RAK Diabetes Challenge 2022 website to generate their unique registration number.

Those participating in the physical category can report to the RAK hospital premises on September 24-25.

Virtual challenge entrants can get tested at any clinic of their choice and submit their results online.

According to the hospital, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is rising globally. The UAE has one of the highest prevalence rates in the world, with a prevalence of 18.7% and is expected to reach 21.4% by 2030. Additionally, approximately 40.7% of adults (ages 20-79) with T2D diabetes did not know they had diabetes. condition.

Our idea is to help people understand that taking just a pill is not the solution until they are truly committed to lifestyle changes. Trainers and professionals will “consistently guide” contestants through weekly webinars, daily wellness tips and educational sessions, supporting them in implementing healthy lifestyle changes and management programs tailored to their individual needs.

Hospital CEO Dr JM Gauer said: “Diabetes is known to be one of the greatest threats facing society today, caused by inappropriate lifestyle habits including sedentary habits, lack of physical activity, high amounts of processed and junk food, etc. In addition, diabetes is a major risk factor for premature death and serious complications, including heart attack, stroke, blindness, amputation, and kidney failure.
