COP28 During a recent media briefing, Expo City Dubai officials announced the provision of a dedicated space for climate activists attending COP28. The Voices for Action hub, located in the Green Zone next to the Mobility entrance, will serve as a peaceful assembly point for activists to make their voices heard.
Two Zones, Diverse Functions
COP28 will feature two distinct zones. The Blue Zone, accessible exclusively to UN-accredited participants, will host formal negotiations and significant events. In contrast, the Green Zone will be an open space for the public to engage in dialogue and raise awareness about climate action.
Emphasis on Inclusivity: COP28
In August, the UAE and the UNFCCC issued a joint statement underscoring the significance of inclusivity, transparency, and respect in the COP process. COP28 President-Designate Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell expressed their commitment to making COP28 the most inclusive UN Climate Change Conference to date.
Key Pillars of Action
The COP28 plan of action centers around four key pillars: fast-tracking the energy transition, addressing climate finance with a focus on people’s lives and livelihoods, and underpinning everything with full inclusivity.
Call for Participation: COP28
Dr. Al Jaber highlighted inclusivity as a critical enabler for transformative progress in the climate agenda. The organizers urged increased participation and meaningful engagement of youth, women, local communities, and indigenous peoples in decision-making processes related to climate action.
Reaffirmation of Values
Stiell reaffirmed the UNFCCC’s dedication to upholding UN values at COPs, ensuring that the voices of those most affected by climate change are heard and represented in leadership roles.
Anticipated Delegates and Commitment: COP28
With expectations of hosting over 70,000 delegates, including heads of state, civic and world leaders, environmental experts, and advocates, COP28 organizers are committed to creating a platform where diverse voices can contribute to shaping climate decisions and actions.
Culmination at Expo City Dubai
COP28 is scheduled to take place from November 30 to December 12 at Expo City Dubai, emphasizing the importance of unity, inclusivity, and ambitious action in addressing the global climate crisis.
