When Goldie Michal, 37, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April, she felt her life was falling apart.

However, some timely diagnosis and treatment, as well as some precise breast reconstruction surgery at a Saudi-German hospital, not only put her life back on track, but also restored her shattered confidence.

Michal’s trial began with her regular visits to the hospital for general checkups. To her eternal shock, she was told she had multifocal cancer in her right breast.

“I’ve had ultrasounds for a few years because I knew I had cysts in my breasts, but it wasn’t bothersome,” Michal said.

“However, during the MRI and PET CT in April, the doctor told me that I had cancer. When the lump got bigger, I was horrified by the news,” recalls Michal.

When the initial treatment began in August, a multidisciplinary team of doctors at Saudi German Hospital developed a treatment plan to try to save her breasts. “But with multiple tumors, they said it would be a complex and difficult job,” Michal said.

However, the team of doctors did manage to put her on the road to recovery, saving her breasts as well.

Michal is delighted that her aesthetic has not changed after some precise and detailed work by plastic surgeon Professor Robert Hierner at the Saudi German Hospital.

The plastic surgeon told Khaleej Times that the 8-hour operation was a success thanks to excellent teamwork. “After the cancerous tissue and tumor was removed by Dr. Ritu Khare, an oncologist at the Saudi German Hospital, my task was to complete the breast reconstruction. “Michal’s case was complicated because the entire right breast had to be removed. And reconstructing a full breast presents many challenges,” Professor Hillner said.

Surgeons say patients diagnosed with breast cancer have two options for reconstruction — silicon implants or autologous tissue, in which the patient’s tissue is extracted from the abdomen, inner thighs or back to reconstruct the breast. “But with Michal, tissue from the front torso was removed to recreate the breast shape,” Professor Hierner said.

Since this is a complex case, the surgeon faces many challenges. “Reconstruction using autologous tissue was a challenge because we had to model the breast perfectly into the other breast, and the nipple should be perfectly symmetrical with the contralateral breast. Thankfully, we didn’t find any lumps in the left breast,” Professor Hillner said. Say.

Michal is doing well now, but doctors say she must undergo six months of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation. “Getting cancer treatment is a gradual process,” Michal said.

Only 3% of breast reconstructions are performed with autologous tissue. In contrast to reconstructions using silicone implants, no further prosthetic procedures are required in the future. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy can also significantly reduce complication rates, explains Prof. Hierner.

If diagnosed with breast cancer, women should not panic, he said, while noting that rapid diagnosis is essential. Professor Hierner said: “If the lump is growing or you feel like there is a discharge from the nipple, you should talk to your doctor.”
