A civil lawsuit seeking damages brought by the family of a man who was killed in a car crash has been dismissed. The family has demanded Dh200,000 in compensation from the driver of the car and his car insurance company.
According to official court documents, the driver of the first defendant in the case accidentally rammed into another car driven by the victim. The victim suffered serious injuries and died later in hospital. A police investigation blamed the crash on reckless behavior by the accused driver.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court had earlier fined the driver Dh5,000 after it was found that he accidentally killed the man in a traffic accident. He was also ordered to pay Dh200,000 in blood money to the victim’s family.
The victim’s family then filed a civil lawsuit against the defendant and his insurance company, demanding compensation for the mental and material losses suffered due to the death of the relative.
Lawyers for the accused argued that the plaintiff had received blood money in the criminal court judgment. He requested that the case be dismissed for lack of justification.
After hearing all parties, the civil court dismissed the case.
The judge said that the blood debt has been awarded to the family members, and the plaintiff cannot file a claim for compensation against the two defendants in the same case to set a precedent for punishment.
