Authorities say begging is a social scourge that tarnishes the civilized image of any society

Among those arrested for begging in Abu Dhabi in recent months is a woman who was caught driving a luxury car while asking for alms.

Abu Dhabi police said they arrested 159 beggars between November 6 and December 12 last year.

In one of the cases, a woman was reported by a resident after she suspected her of begging, according to police. Police monitored her and found her begging in front of mosques in various parts of the city. She would walk a long way until she reached where she parked her car, one of the newest luxury models. The police also found her with a large amount of money from her begging.

The cash was confiscated and the woman was charged.

According to the authorities, begging is a social scourge that tarnishes the civilized image of any society.

“Begging is socially uncivilized and a crime in the UAE. Beggars have the potential to be fraudulent, defrauding people and profiting from their generosity,” the police said.

UAE prosecutors explained that the penalty for begging is three months’ imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dh5,000 or one of the two penalties. The penalty for organized begging is six months’ imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dh100,000.

Police earlier said that efforts have been stepped up through a comprehensive security plan across the emirate to ensure public safety and security and prevent undesirable behavior such as begging.

The government has been setting up special teams to check as part of the police crackdown on begging, especially during Ramadan.

The police warned that any beggars caught will be dealt with and punished according to law.

According to the police, the UAE government has established official charity channels and those in need should register with these institutions to ensure donations reach them.
