A 40-year-old Filipino salesman – who used to borrow Dh10 to Dh100 from friends during tough times – became an overnight multi-millionaire after winning a jackpot of up to Dh10 million in the recent Super Saturday draw organized by Mahzooz .

Arlene, who has lived in Abu Dhabi for 12 years, was dressed in a blue denim jacket, blue shirt and blue jeans as she met reporters at her check-handling ceremony on Wednesday.

Arlene is the second Filipino expatriate to become an overnight multi-millionaire this year. late january, Filipino expatriate and store manager Russel Reyes Tuazon, 34, won Dh15 million in another draw. According to Mahzooz, five Filipinos, including Arlene, have become multi-millionaires since the 2021 Mahzooz draw.

“Filipinos are the second largest group of participants in Mahzooz,” noted Farid Samji, CEO of Ewings and managing operator of Mahzooz, adding: “A total of 50,000 Filipinos have won prizes ranging from AED3.50 to AED10 million. Prizes ranging from prize money to more than AED 62 million.”

Arlened hit five of the five winning numbers (9, 10, 13, 28, 29). She has been attending Mahzooz for over a year, insisting on buying a ticket every week and choosing the same combination that holds great significance in her life.

She said that the 9th and 13th are her husband’s birthday; 10 is her date of birth; 29 is her mother-in-law’s birthday, and 28 is the death day of her father who died three years ago.

When Arlene talks about her family, she gets emotional. While they had no children to support, she and her husband, a businessman, supported the family.

Their combined income of Dh7,000 is not enough to make ends meet. “A few times I have had to borrow Dh10 to Dh100 from friends because we didn’t have enough money for food or my husband’s car ran out of gas,” she said in a trembling voice.

An emotional Arlene added: “We’ve had to cut back; sometimes we just have cheap tinned sardines for dinner. But now, I think we can buy whatever food we want.”

Despite the huge windfall, Arlene said she would remain grounded. The first thing she has to do is to invest in real estate – to buy a piece of land in the Philippines to build a house.

They will also bring their family to the UAE, she added, “because this country has given her so many opportunities.” She will also donate part of her winnings to charities, and most importantly, she will be with them to help her through difficult times. Friends who are struggling share the blessing – what she calls an “overwhelming gift from God”.
