SHARJAH 24 – WAM: The United Arab Emirates was officially granted dialogue partner status during the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Goa, Republic of India, on 4 and 5 May 2023.
Dr. Abdulnasser Alshaali, UAE Ambassador to India, and Zhang Ming, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the UAE’s accession to the SCO as a dialogue partner.
The award of dialogue partner status reflects the UAE’s unremitting efforts to develop and maintain balanced and diverse partnerships with countries and multilateral organizations around the world.
Reflecting on the UAE’s partnership with the SCO, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, highlighted the organization’s role in supporting the entire Eurasian continent in recent decades key role in the political stability and economic prosperity of the region and beyond.
Commenting on this, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed said: “As an active and engaged member of the international community, the UAE has an unwavering commitment to multilateralism and the UAE recognizes the SCO Organizations such as the vital importance of building bridges of cooperation between member states to achieve common goals. Over the period to come, the UAE will seek to make significant progress in its engagement with the SCO and its member states. As a nation and nation, we are delighted to be welcomed as conversational partners of an organization whose global reach and importance will only grow.”
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established in June 2001. The main goal of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is to strengthen the relationship between member states; to promote cooperation in the fields of politics, economy and trade, science and technology, culture, education, energy, transportation, tourism, environmental protection, etc.; to maintain regional peace, security and stability; to establish a fair and just international politics economic order.
The member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization are the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The SCO observer states include the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Republic of Belarus and Mongolia.
United Arab Emirates, State of Kuwait, Kingdom of Bahrain, Republic of Maldives and Myanmar join existing SCO dialogue partners, which include Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Armenia, Kingdom of Cambodia, Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, Republic of Turkey, Arab Republic of Egypt, State of Qatar, Saudi Arabia Kingdom and Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
