One of the most spectacular meteor showers will culminate in one of the most spectacular meteor showers in the UAE skies on the night of December 14-15. According to the Dubai Astronomical Organization, residents will have the chance to see the Geminids, the biggest and last meteor shower of the year.

What is the Geminid meteor shower?

The Geminids are fragments that enter our planet’s atmosphere at 70 kilometers per second, vaporize and form the bands of light we call meteors. The spectacular meteor shower has been known to produce more than 150 meteors per hour at its peak, although light pollution and other factors mean that in reality, the actual number of meteors visible is much smaller.

Geminid meteors appear to radiate from the bright vicinity of Castor. However, the actual source of the meteor is the debris stream left by the asteroid 3200 Phaethon, making it one of the only major meteor showers not to come from a comet.

When is the event held?

Residents can see this spectacle on Wednesday, December 14th and Thursday, December 15th. However, 70% of the Moon could be disturbed this year, which would overshadow the fainter meteors.

How to watch this event?

Hasan Al Hariri, chief executive of Dubai Astronomy Group, said people don’t need any special equipment or skills to watch the meteor shower. All it takes is clear skies and a secluded viewpoint away from the city lights.

Residents planning to go out to watch a meteor show in the desert should bring warm clothing, as it can be very cold outside.

Where to catch this event?

The Dubai Astronomy Group will host a special event at Al Qudra, Dubai on December 14th. Running from 8pm to 12am, the event also includes viewing the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn with a telescope; an astrophotography session; sky mapping; viewing meteors with the naked eye and more.

Event tickets start at AED 70. For more information, visit www.althurayaastronomycenter.ae/geminids-meteor-shower-2022
