UAE: Indian PM Modi hails Dubai martial arts club for carrying forward ancient traditions

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has named and praised a martial arts club in Dubai, little known outside the emirate, for its work “carrying forward the ancient traditions of mankind”.

In his monthly radio address to the nation, dubbed “Mann ki Baat”, which roughly translates to “thoughts in the mind”, Modi praised Dubai’s Kalari club for its status in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The club set a world record for the largest number of people ever gathered to perform Kalarippayattu together in one place. Kalaripayattu is an ancient Indian martial art with a history of over 3000 years. The club describes it as the “mother of martial arts”.

“The old heritage is being preserved in the hands of the new generation,” Modi said. 270 people performed in one venue at the record-breaking rally in Dubai. Modi noted that their age ranged from four to 60 years old.

“If clubs in Dubai set records, what is its relationship to India?” Modi asked his regular audience of millions. “Because this record is related to Kalaripayattu, an ancient Indian martial art.”

He called it “an excellent example of how different generations can carry forward an ancient tradition with full inner enthusiasm. I am very happy that such efforts are being made not only at home but also abroad”.

The Prime Minister went on to mention similar efforts in India’s Lakshadweep to preserve local culture and traditional arts. “Young people there are being trained in local arts such as Kolkali, Parichakli, Kilipaat and other traditional singing.”

This is the second time Modi has mentioned Dubai in his monthly national radio address. Exactly two years ago, in the last week of December 2020, the Prime Minister praised the initiative of Dubai food traders to promote Kashmiri saffron with Geographical Indication (GI) labels in the UAE.

“You will be happy to know that Kashmiri saffron has been launched in a supermarket in Dubai after getting the GI label certificate. Now its export will get a boost,” Modi told the audience. Geographical indications are signs used for products that have a specific geographical origin and have qualities or reputations derived from that origin.

Modi’s Mann ki Baat is now in its eighth year. Yesterday was his 96th episode since becoming prime minister in 2014.
