An International Driver’s License (IDL) is one of the most important documents a tourist can carry. The document is valid for one year and allows its holders to take road trips in the countries they visit.
The IDL is a United Nations convention, and the UAE is one of dozens of countries that recognize it. This means that those visiting the UAE can legally drive in the country if they have an IDL.
Emiratis and expatriates with a valid UAE driving license can get an IDL of less than Dh200. They can use this document to drive a vehicle outside the UAE.
Can a tourist get an IDL from the UAE?
Tourists or visit visa holders cannot obtain an IDL from the UAE. They must be obtained from their home country before arriving in the UAE.
According to the information available on the Emirates Car and Travel Club website, to drive in the country one must have an IDL issued outside the UAE.
According to the terms and conditions of using the IDL in Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) states that the applicant can use the international document in all countries except the one where the license was issued.
“International driving permits cannot be issued for provisional and interim licences,” the RTA added.
Which cars can an IDL holder drive in Dubai?
A notice posted on the RTA website says visitors with a valid IDL can rent a car or “drive a car that is registered in your or your first-degree relative’s name.” They can drive light vehicles or motorcycles.
The Emirates Automobile and Travel Club said tourists “can only drive hired vehicles (rental cars)”.
The RTA stipulates that transit visa holders can drive vehicles here if they have a valid IDL and “approval from the insurance company”.
Can IDL be used in multiple countries?
According to the RTA, customers can use the same international driver’s license to drive in more than one country as long as it is valid.
What is IDL mainly used for?
Essentially, the IDL certifies that the driver holds a valid driver’s license in their country of residence.
“It also helps protect you and your family in the event of accidental vehicle damage abroad, or loss of legal identification documents such as passports,” said the Emirates Auto and Travel Club. “The main function of the IDL is to allow law enforcement in other countries to Departments and other authorities read your license in their own language.”
