UAE: Is your Indian passport expiring soon?Here’s how to apply for renewal online

Dubai: If you are a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) in the UAE and your passport is about to expire, you do not have to worry about filling out a physical form at the Passport Centre to apply for renewal. The Passport Seva service of the Indian Embassy allows you to complete the entire application process online.

All you have to do is fill out your registration form online, sign and submit it to the BLS International Centre, an outsourced agency for processing Indian passport and visa applications.

So if your passport is about to expire, here is a detailed step-by-step guide on the renewal process.

How to Renew Indian Passport Online

1. Visit this link: https://embassy.passportindia.gov.in/ and select your region and country of residence. To do this, select the “Africa and Middle East” category and select the United Arab Emirates.

2. Next, click on “Register – Register for Passport Service”. After clicking on the category, you will be asked to create an online account using the Passport Seva portal. If you already have an account with the portal, please log in with your account details.

How to register a new account

To register an account, you must complete the following information:

• Embassy/Consulate: Abu Dhabi or Dubai
• First name (first name)
• surname
• date of birth
• Email address

After entering these details, creating a password and confirming, select “Prompt Question” for security purposes: eg – your city of birth. Enter the verification code and click the “Sign Up Button”.
You will then receive a confirmation email from Passport Seva with an activation link. Click on the activation link and log in with your email address and password.

3. After logging in, click the service “Registration – Register for Passport Application Service” again.

4. Click “Apply for Ordinary Passport”.

5. Next, you will be asked to select the following options:

• Passport Type: New Passport or Passport Reissue. For passport renewal requests, select “Passport Reissue”.

• “Reissuance Reason” – eg: “Validity expires in three years or is about to expire”

• Type of application – normal or tatkal (urgent).

• Passport booklet type – 36 or 60 pages

6. Next, fill in the following applicant details:

• First name (first name)
• surname
• gender
• Are you known by other names (aliases)? – Yes or no
• Have you ever changed your name? – Yes or no

• date of birth
• place of birth
• Were you born outside India? – Yes or no
• Place/Country of Birth
• marital status

• Indian Citizenship
– Registration/naturalization
– decline
– born

• Enter your PAN (Permanent Account Number) number or Voter ID (if available) – this is optional
• Type of employment
• Education

• Whether parent (minor) or spouse is a public servant – yes or no
• Whether the applicant is eligible to apply for a non-ECR (Non-Immigration Check Requirement) category – yes or no. According to the Indian Embassy Helpline – 800 46342 – Non-ECR is a category for individuals who have passed the tenth grade with a higher education. This means that immigration checks are not required to work in certain countries.
• Do you have clearly distinguishable marks? If you do, you will describe it in the table.
• Aadhar number (if available) – this is optional

• Next, agree to the terms and conditions.

7. After completing the application details, click the Next button.

8. For the next part of your passport renewal application, you must enter your household details:

• Father’s full name
• Mother’s full name
• Name of legal guardian (if applicable)
• Spouse’s full name (if applicable)
• If you are applying as a minor, you must enter the passport numbers of the father and mother. If they are not Indian, you must enter nationality.

9. Next enter the address details. For this section, you enter the address printed on your passport, which should include:

• House number
• Village or city
• Area
• The nearest police station. (Passport Seva Portal has a service called Know Your Police Department on its website. You can find the link here: https://portal5.passportindia.gov.in/Online/locatePS. To find the nearest Police Department, you must enter the state and territory and enter the verification code displayed and click Submit. You will then find a list of police departments in your area.)

10. Next enter your email address and mobile number

11. After that, enter your emergency contact and address. This includes mobile phone numbers and email addresses.

12. Enter your previous passport details:

• Passport number
• Date of issue
• expiry date
• issue location

12. After filling in the passport details, the last part of the application process is “Additional Details” – this is a list of questions that you must answer yes or no.

1. If you have any criminal proceedings
2. Convicted by an Indian court
3. If you have ever been refused or refused a passport
4. Have you applied for or obtained foreign citizenship?
5. Are you returning to India with an outpass?

Once the application form is complete, you must review and verify the details and click Submit.

After submitting the application form online, you must print the form and submit the application in person to the BLS International Services Customer Centre, and Sign the application form in the presence of a BLS International Services customer service officer.

Documents required by the BLS Center:

In addition to submitting your passport renewal application, you will also need to submit the following documents:

• original passport
• Copy of UAE residence visa page
• Two clear passport photos. According to the BLS, these are the photo requirements for an Indian passport:
– 51mm X 51mm (no more than three months, no uniform), white background
– wear dark clothes
– No shadows on face and neck
– No reflections on glasses.

You can take pictures at the BLS Center. You may also need to bring other identification documents, such as Emirates ID or a driver’s license.

• Adult – 36 pages: Dh265
• Adult – 60 pages: AED 380

How long does it take to issue a passport?

According to the BLS, the passport renewal process can take up to 30 days depending on the circumstances.

Need an urgent passport renewal?Using the “Tatkal” service

If you need to travel to India due to a medical emergency, or if your family member dies, your passport renewal can be fast tracked through the “Tatkal” service. The “Tatkal” service allows you to renew your passport within two working days. However, you must make an appointment with the BLS. The cost of renewing passports through the “Tatkal” service is higher.
