UAE-Israel land bridge planned to pass through Saudi Arabia

[ad_1]

(July 10, 2023 / JNS)

A proposal is being advanced to build a land bridge linking the United Arab Emirates and Israel via Saudi Arabia and Jordan to facilitate the flow of goods.

The US-backed “Trucks Land Connectivity” project will enable trucks to transport goods between Dubai Creek and the Israeli port of Haifa, while drastically cutting costs and time, even before normalizing relations with Riyadh. the Internet reported.

The land corridor was initially used for freight and was later extended to Bahrain and Oman. In the future, it will serve passengers, including tourists.

Currently, trucks leaving the UAE arrive at Haifa Post via the Allenby Bridge from Jordan, but they face bureaucratic procedures including required driver changes, paperwork and long waiting times. Another option for transporting goods is through the Suez Canal and then to European ports, which is also expensive.

A study by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. government cited in the report showed that the current proposal would reduce travel time from a few weeks to two or three days, saving up to 20 percent in transport costs.

The foreign ministry and the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem declined to comment on the plan on Monday.

The project is the latest tangible outcome of the 2020 Abraham Accords, which saw Israel make peace with four Arab countries led by the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

The proposal comes as part of a separate long-term plan to build a rail line between Israel and the Gulf states via Saudi Arabia, which would be a train linking Israel, the Gulf, Europe and the east part of the project.
