The UAE and Japan have signed several agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2023 to help accelerate energy transition and industrial technology adoption.
Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) and UAE Special Envoy to Japan, met Yasutoshi Nishimura, Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry to discuss the hydrogen industry as a key component of a just energy transition.They also discussed the importance and opportunities for cooperation to accelerate progress towards carbon neutrality ahead of COP28 later this year, the state news agency reported. Dr Al Jaber said: “The UAE and Japan have a long and strong relationship that has grown into a comprehensive economic partnership based on our leadership’s commitment to strengthen cooperation with strategic partners. We seek to contribute to mutual benefit by exploring Sustainable economic growth and diverse new opportunities for cooperation and investment to build this long-term partnership.”

Key points of signed memorandum of understanding
Agreements signed during the meeting included a Memorandum of Understanding between MoIAT and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. It covers cooperation in the fields of industry and advanced technology, and aims to strengthen partnerships between Emirati and Japanese companies and explore joint investment opportunities.According to reports, this will further promote cooperation and accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies to support the industrial goals and carbon reduction goals of the two countries Wan.

Dr. Al Jaber also witnessed the signing of a joint research agreement between ADNOC and Tsubame BHB to establish collaboration in research and development aimed at finding new solutions for the manufacture of ammonia. The agreement falls under the Japan-UAE Advanced Technology Partnership.
The initiative supports Japanese tech start-ups and helps them connect with UAE investors to facilitate their expansion.
Masdar also signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese company JERA covering the green hydrogen and renewable energy sectors.
UAE-Japan Trade Relations
The signing of these agreements falls within the framework of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership signed between the two countries in September 2022.
In 2021, the non-oil trade volume between the two countries will exceed AED49 billion. In addition, in the first nine months of 2022, the non-oil trade volume between the two countries will increase by 4.3% year-on-year.
