Karak chai (strong tea), a variation of traditional Indian tea, is one of the most popular drinks in the UAE, if not the most popular. Whether it is for Emirati, Arab or Asian, it is the first choice of many residents.

Its popularity has grown to the point that many cafes in Dubai and Sharjah make more money selling karak chai than other beverages. Karak House, Koukh Al Shay and Filli are the most popular destinations for karak chai lovers.

karak chai, made from loose black tea, milk, sugar and spice mix, now costs Dh1.50 a glass, 50% price increase at most cafes (from Dh1 only) last year. However, a restaurant in the Dubai Mall sells this popular coffee for just Dh0.50 (50 fils) a cup, not Dh1.50 or Dh1.

Known for housing the world’s ultra-luxury fashion brands as well as some popular high-end restaurants and cafes including Angelina, CZN Burak, Hafiz Mustafa 1864, Home Bakery and Peet’s Coffee, Dubai Mall will be, of all places, the The most unlikely place for 50-fil karak chai. But, as this restaurant demonstrates, why not?

The Ana restaurant on the first floor serves sumptuous and luxurious Emirati and Arabic cuisine, and the karak chai is only 50 Phil. However, patrons must bring 50 phil change to enjoy their favorite beer.

Ana’s karak chai went viral after the hot drink started selling at such a high price during Ramadan. Residents shared the good news on social media, unable to get over the fact that their favorite drink has just gotten cheaper.

The only option for customers is takeaway, and you’ll see Asian, Emirati and Arabic customers heading straight to the restaurant, which sells hundreds of cups a day.

“I saw on social media that this restaurant was selling karak chai for only 50 fils. I couldn’t believe it, so I decided to try it. It tastes really good,” says Arif Ali.

“I love karak chai. I usually drink three to four cups a day, depending on my workload, because it relieves my stress. A friend of mine who visited the mall last week told me that karak chai costs 50 phi I didn’t believe him. So, I decided to visit and experience it for myself. It’s amazing!” said Aditidas.
