RAMALLAH: Israeli forces shot and killed two Palestinians, including a 57-year-old teacher, Thursday in a dawn raid on the flashpoint city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, officials and medics said.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Steyer has called on countries around the world to intervene in an effort to stop the crimes committed by Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian people.

He also demanded that Israel take full responsibility for the continuation of such crimes.

Teacher Jawad Bawakna, a father of six, and Adham Jabarin, 28, were both shot dead in the Jenin refugee camp.

The two deaths bring the Palestinian death toll since the start of the year to 17, including four children. Nine of the deaths occurred in Jenin.

Fifteen people were arrested in the raid.

Large forces of the Israeli army stormed the camp and deployed snipers on the roofs of several houses and buildings overlooking the camp.

Israeli special forces infiltrated a residential building at the entrance to the camp, storming several apartments and detaining residents, confiscating their mobile phones.

Ata Abu Rumaila, Fatah’s secretary in Jenin, said Israeli troops opened fire on the teacher as he tried to give Jabalin first aid.

Ambulance crews were prevented from entering the camp to provide treatment and transfer the injured to hospitals, where they were transferred to private vehicles.

Subsequently, the young people in the camp clashed fiercely with the Israeli army. When the army arrested the citizens, three people were wounded by live ammunition.

The Fatah movement and resistance forces in Jenin declared mourning for the two dead.

Wissam Becker, director of the Khalil Suleiman Government Hospital in Jenin, said the Israeli army fired bullets at the hospital, threatening the lives of patients and doctors.

Shtayyeh condemned the targeting of hospitals by the occupying forces and called on the World Health Organization and other international bodies to condemn the crimes.

Mahmoud Alour, the deputy leader of the Fatah movement, said the actions of the occupying forces showed that the status quo could no longer be maintained.

He said leadership was discussing several scenarios, but noted that resisting the occupation was the most viable option.

Major General Akram Rajub, governor of Jenin province, said the execution of citizens at the Jenin camp showed that killing was a top priority for the Israeli government.

He told Arab News: “It is clear that Jenin has been targeted more than any other city in the West Bank, and the number of brutality, violence and incursions is increasing in an unprecedented way.

“The number of troops and military vehicles attacking cities, camps and villages increases each time.”

He added that the violent situation in Jenin had negatively affected all aspects of the city’s security, economy and social life.

He added: “At the moment, I’m walking the streets of Jenin and all the shops are closed.

“In such an atmosphere, no one comes to the city to shop, not even the Palestinians who live in neighboring Israeli cities. They are used to coming to shop and revitalize the city’s economy.

“Jenin, it’s like a ghost town after these heinous killings.”

Hussein Sheikh, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s executive committee, said President Mahmoud Abbas planned to ask US national security adviser Jack Sullivan to encourage Israelis to stop crime when the two met in Ramallah.

Separately, Maher Younis, 65, was released from an Israeli prison on Thursday after serving a 40-year sentence.

Younis was released from Be’er Sheva prison in southern Israel shortly after dawn, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club said.

On January 18, 1983, Younis was sentenced for his rebellion against Israel and his membership in the Fatah movement.

“I hope that when I come out of captivity in 40 years, I will see my country liberated. I want all prisoners to be free,” he said.

Israeli police prevented Younis’ family from celebrating his release.

However, despite threats from the police, large crowds from the village of Allah and the Arab community flocked to his home to celebrate his freedom.
