UAE, Maltese presidents discuss strengthening bilateral ties

Abu Dhabi [UAE], 19 June (ANI/WAM): UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan today met with Maltese President George Villa, who is on an official visit to the UAE. His Highness welcomed President Villa and his accompanying delegation at the start of the meeting at the Al Shati Palace in Abu Dhabi. He expressed the hope that through this visit, the relations between the two countries will be further developed and strengthened.

His Highness and President Villa discussed enhancing cooperation and leveraging opportunities to strengthen their relationship, particularly in the areas of investment, trade, renewable energy, food security, environment and innovation, among other areas that drive sustainable development in both countries. The two leaders also reviewed a number of regional and international issues and developments, emphasizing the desire of both countries to work together through their UN Security Council memberships to support peace, stability and cooperation around the world, while strengthening international collective action to address global challenges.

The meeting relates to the COP28 climate conference, which will be hosted by the UAE later this year, given the two countries’ joint coordination in the UN Security Council on strengthening the international response to the threat of climate change. His Highness expressed the UAE’s commitment to strengthening sustainable partnerships and exchanging expertise with other countries in various fields to jointly achieve common development goals.

The UAE President further stated that the relationship between the UAE and Malta is developing steadily, and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He confirmed that the UAE is eager to cooperate with Malta in various fields, especially in areas such as industry, energy, digital economy, green economy, and food security that are conducive to the development and prosperity of the two countries. His Highness pointed out that the UAE is an important trading partner of Malta among the GCC countries. The President of Malta said that it has been a mutual interest to strengthen bilateral relations to enhance the common interests of both countries over the past few decades. He expressed his country’s desire to increase trade and open up new areas of cooperation, especially in the economic sphere of the future.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Adviser on Special Affairs to the Presidential Court; Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy, Minister of State for International Cooperation; and Lieutenant General Issa Saif bin Ablan Al Mazrouei, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. Also in attendance was a delegation accompanying the Maltese President, which included Dr Ian Borg, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and Trade; Maria Camilleri Calleja, Malta’s Ambassador to the UAE; and a number of senior officials.
