An Asian expat was killed at the scene in a hit-and-run accident in Sharjah earlier this week, police said. The driver who fled the scene was arrested within 48 hours.
According to Sharjah police, the victim was trying to cross the six-lane Mohammed bin Zayed Road when a car driven by a young driver ran over him.
Lieutenant Colonel Omar Mohammad Bou Ghanem, Deputy Chief of Traffic and Patrol at Sharjah Police, said they received a report of the incident at around 6.38pm on Wednesday. It happened near the Sheikh Khalifa Bridge in the direction of Dubai.
After being alerted, Sharjah police rushed to the scene, but the victim died at the scene. They reviewed CCTV footage from the area and managed to identify the driver who fled the scene.
A manhunt launched shortly after the incident resulted in the arrest of the motorist, in his 20s. A lawsuit was subsequently filed with the Public Prosecution Office.
Lt-Col Bou Ghanem warned pedestrians against illegally crossing the highway, which can travel at speeds of up to 140 kilometers.
“Always obey all traffic rules and regulations. Drivers involved in an accident must stop and take responsibility. Failure to do so may result in criminal charges,” he added.
