Unfortunately, there is a lack of public awareness for early screening and cancer prevention, the UAE minister said at the 10th UAE Oncology Conference in Abu Dhabi.

Cancer remains the leading cause of death worldwide, killing nearly 10 million people in 2020, or nearly one in six deaths, according to the World Health Organization.

Opening the conference, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, noted that the UAE has always been committed to promoting excellence in health and advanced medical practice.

“President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan firmly believes that good health promotes success. He considers improving the health of our people to be one of our nation’s highest priorities,” the minister said in a statement on oncology Speeches by experts, physicians, surgeons and allied health professionals.

Sheikh Nahyan said that under the leadership and guidance of Sheikh Mohammed, the UAE has adopted a comprehensive approach to healthcare.

“Not only do we strive to provide the best possible care for our patients, but we also understand that promoting health and preventing disease are key initiatives in ensuring the best public health.”

The minister said that the UAE has been striving to acquire the most advanced technologies to detect the disease early, implement the most effective treatments and cures, and empower society to support cancer patients and their families.

He stressed that despite remarkable advances in the fight to prevent and treat cancer through innovations such as nanotechnology, T-cell therapy, artificial intelligence and robotic surgery, the disease “will always remain a major challenge” for everyone.

“There will continue to be many people who can help them understand this disease better. The irony is that we know that more and more cancers are preventable, while at the same time public awareness of early warning signs and awareness of Acceptance of an appropriate lifestyle is far from enough. Unfortunately, many people ignore the symptoms of cancer until the time for effective treatment has passed.”

Sheikh Nahyan urged healthcare professionals to continue educating the public and working towards discoveries and breakthroughs.

“We must emphasize the importance of understanding the disease and the importance of timely action. We must help improve screening, detection and prevention programs. We must work to eliminate the fear associated with cancer. We must promote environmental and lifestyle changes. We must Our capacity must be built to carry out original scientific research relevant to our region,” the minister added.

The conference, hosted by Tawam Hospital and the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), will conclude on Sunday.

Dr Sultan Mohamed Alkaram, Chief Executive Officer of Tawam Hospital, said: “Our aim has always been to transform the delivery of the UAE’s healthcare system so that our communities have access to world-class services that enhance their health and wellbeing. Important continuing education organized by SEHA Events, such as the UAE Oncology Conference, are critical to our continued development in the treatment of complex diseases such as cancer.”
