UAE: Muslim expats can now sponsor 2 wives at the same time

Dubai: A Muslim resident in the UAE can now sponsor two wives at the same time under certain circumstances and under conditions set by the Federal Authority for Status, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, Al Khaleej newspaper reported.

According to the UAE Digital Government, eligible Muslim residents can obtain residence visas for two wives and their children. Key among the prerequisites is a duly certified marriage contract certified in Arabic or translated into Arabic by a sworn translator.

Sponsor a child

Additionally, UAE legislation allows Emirati fathers to sponsor their unmarried daughters regardless of their age. As for sons, they can only be sponsored by their fathers until they are 25 years old. However, the father can also sponsor if the son continues to study after the age of 25.

As for sponsoring newborns, the father must obtain a residence permit within 120 days of the baby’s birth to avoid any fines. Likewise, residents can sponsor their wives’ children from a previous marriage after meeting the requirements of federal authorities, which include a statement of consent and a bond from the child’s biological father. The residence permit is valid for one year and is renewable annually upon fulfillment of the necessary conditions.

needed file

Federal authorities also specify eight documents required to sponsor a wife and children: residence visa application (online or through a licensed typing centre), passport photographs of the sponsored person and sponsor, a white background photograph of the wife and children, wife and Original health certificates for children over 18 years old, copy of husband’s employment or company contract (if he is the employer), valid work visa for sponsor, proof of husband’s salary, and certified lease contract.

Authorities emphasize that family residence permits are linked to that of the sponsor or head of household. If the residence permit of the sponsor or head of household is cancelled, the residence permits of the family members must also be canceled subsequently. Family members will then be granted a new residence visa or leave the country within six months of the expiration or cancellation of their residence visa.

Penalties will be imposed if the sponsor or head of household fails to renew or cancel the residence visa of a family member.
