A new education initiative aims to tackle youth unemployment in the UAE and the wider MENA region.

The youth training program, called Next Level, will target more than 1,000 college students and recent graduates.

The programme, a partnership between L’Oréal Middle East and Nestlé, will target 50 universities in the MENA region.

Jean-Dominique De Ravignan, Human Resources Director, L’Oréal Middle East, said: “The new UAE postgraduate development programme ‘L’Oréal Lakom’ is designed for UAE nationals to unlock their potential. We have been working on establishing a rigorous training programme that supports The development of senior staff. These include postgraduate trainees, a full-time 6 to 12-month program for recent graduates, ideally candidates with two years of experience. Then a management trainee, a 12 -24-month full-time rotation program to develop future business leaders.”

A total of 17 universities in the UAE have participated in the NXL program, including the American University of Dubai, the American University of Sharjah, the University of Dubai, Ajman University, University of Wollongong, Zayed University, HULT University, Canadian University of Dubai, New York University in Abu Dhabi, Sorbonne University, Sharjah University, Emirates American University, MiddleSex University, RIT, Khalifa University, Heriot-Watt University and IMT Business School.

Ravignan emphasizes, “We recognize that there is a wealth of untapped talent and potential, while employment opportunities for young workers remain scarce. Between 2010 and 2021, youth unemployment in the region is nearly double the world average and is growing at a rate of 2.5 times the world average, which supports this. Against this backdrop, we want to expand our long-standing effort – the L’Oréal Youth Programme – towards the region as part of L’Oréal’s future.”

He added: “In the UAE, we are proud to announce that 60% of our recruits have been under the age of 30 over the past two years, and we will continue our efforts to put young people at the centre of our recruitment strategy. We believe that in the wider Training more than 1,000 university students per edition in the MENA region will provide students and recent graduates with the competitive skills that make them attractive candidates in the job market. They can look forward to five key study modules, including Digitalisation, innovation and entrepreneurship, financial analytics, personal branding and creating shared value. In addition to empowering these students with the right employability skills to advance their development, the programme will help them find job opportunities to accelerate their careers.”

Ravignan reiterated that the plan was developed with a focus on “achieving optimal inclusion.”

“In ‘NXL, we do not want to exclude any member from achieving our overarching goal of providing equal opportunities for all, including Emiratis and people of determination. Therefore, the programme is very inclusive in design and does not require Tailored to specific groups because it’s open and accessible to everyone,” he added.
