A 28-year-old Indian chef living in Abu Dhabi who recently won a cash prize of more than Rs 400,000 in a lottery has pledged to donate some of his winnings to victims of the Odisha train accident that claimed 288 lives, media reported. say.
Sahajan Mohammad from the town of Jaspur in Odisha state won a cash prize of Dh20,000 (Rs 4,48,885) last week in a scratch card game at Dream Island, the Khaleej Times newspaper reported.
Referring to the train tragedy in Odisha state on June 2, Mr Mohammad said: “Fortunately, no one I know was involved in this horrific accident…a few people in my local area were injured in this accident. I will offer to help those affected in my village first.”
The train collision in Odisha’s Balasore district is one of the worst railway accidents in decades. The accident killed at least 288 people and injured more than 1,200.
As well as helping victims of the train tragedy, he will use the winnings to pay for the construction of his own home, as well as some relatives in need.
Mr Mohammad, who earns about Dh2,000 a month as a chef at a hotel in the city of Abu Dhabi, had earlier entered unsuccessfully in different lotteries, the report said.
“I will fly home on June 25. I am a father now. I will meet my baby girl. She brings this good fortune,” Mr Mohammad was quoted as saying ecstatically.
According to him, “Life is a game” and he will continue to play it.
“I will continue to play the Dream Island scratch card game. My other friends and cousins have also played and won,” he added.
