CHENNAI – INDIA: The UAE participated in the second Framework Working Group (FWG) meeting within the G20 Finance Track for 2023, held in Chennai, India, on 24-25 March, to discuss the progress made by the 2023 FWG plan.
G20 members, invited countries and international organizations attended the meeting. The UAE delegation included Shamma Yousif Abdelghani, Program Manager and Deputy Chief Innovation Officer, Ministry of Finance, Saood AlNoori, Head of Asia at COP28, and Fares Khamis Al Kaabi, Senior International Economic Analyst at the UAE Central Bank.
FWG members discussed global economic prospects and challenges, with a particular focus on global inflation. In addition, they shared their views on food and energy insecurity by highlighting the implications for growth prospects and inflation.
During the meeting, the UAE delegation introduced the UAE’s economic outlook in light of the current global situation, including economic uncertainty and inflation levels. The UAE delegation further emphasized the importance of coordinating short-term and long-term policy measures to promote food and energy security. Finally, the UAE delegation highlighted emerging uncertainties in the financial sector and discussed effective ways to promote global financial stability and prevent spillovers.
The Indian presidency also arranged a side event for members to discuss macroeconomic risks posed by climate change and transition pathways. The side event is co-hosted with the UAE, host of the upcoming COP28, and discussions at the side event will help guide G20 reporting on macroeconomic risks from climate change and transition pathways.
Members agreed to review the progress of the work programs of the various groups at the next upcoming meeting, on a date to be determined by the Indian Chair.
