Beachgoers in Abu Dhabi have been seeing some jellyfish washed ashore along the shore and in waters as summer approaches and warmer temperatures have prompted warnings from authorities.

The Environment Agency (EAD) – Abu Dhabi has urged beachgoers to avoid contact with jellyfish and keep a safe distance.

These jellyfish are mostly found in UAE waters as peak summer season. “Abu Dhabi waters contain seven species of jellyfish, the most common being the moon jellyfish and the blue blubber jellyfish,” EAD said in a statement.

What should I do if I encounter jellyfish?

“Avoid contact with jellyfish. Keep a safe distance to ensure your safety. If stung by a jellyfish, consult your doctor or go to hospital in severe cases,” the EAD added.

Inside the tentacles of jellyfish are stinging cells called nematocysts. A single tentacle can contain thousands of nematocysts, which contain a poisonous substance that helps the jellyfish defend itself.

According to the EAD, most jellyfish stings are harmless, but some can cause serious injury.

“Typically, most jellyfish colonies emerge when water temperatures rise in summer and start to taper off as temperatures drop. These species cause mild stings, which are harmless and usually go unnoticed by beachgoers Yes. However, people with allergies should be careful because jellyfish stings can cause rashes.”

What are the symptoms of a jellyfish sting?

Symptoms of a sting depend on the type of jellyfish you’ve been exposed to, according to a health care organization. A mild sting can cause mild pain, itching, burning, or throbbing. But more serious jellyfish stings cause more damage and should seek immediate medical help.

Severe symptoms include trouble breathing, chest pain, muscle cramps, blistering of the skin, numbness or tingling, nausea or vomiting, trouble swallowing, abdominal pain, or excessive sweating.
