Schools across the UAE welcomed students back to school on Monday after a three-week winter break.

Traffic around the school zone peaked in the morning and late afternoon as yellow school buses reappeared on the emirate’s roads.

There was also cheers and cheers in the school corridors as students returned to their classrooms, some even taking part in term and mock exams that started today after the winter break.

“Everyone came back from the holidays with a smile on their faces,” said Lisa Johnson, president of the American Women’s College. “We’re excited to meet friends and colleagues and share our winter adventures. It is a normal transition time for international families.

“The first day of school after a long break remains a challenging time as normal sleep times are adjusted and separation from family members after a break can cause anxiety in young children.”

Our teachers support this by setting small academic goals for the day, resting and recharging when needed, and providing activities for students to interact with friends. “

The principal emphasized that many teachers took the time to review material from previous semesters as academic retention drops with breaks. “Updating knowledge and laying the groundwork for the new material that will be covered is imperative. Time is also dedicated to reviewing personal and academic goals to make 2023 a successful year,” Johnson added.

Some schools have used the holidays to make necessary renovations to school libraries and around campus, while trying to create the best possible learning environment for students.

Lauren Pennington, Assistant Headteacher, Years 2-4 at GEMS Royal Dubai, said: “Today is a great day to welcome our new and existing students back to school for term two. We are fortunate to be starting a new FS1 class this year term and it was great to see the happy faces of our new staff in their beautiful uniforms. We look forward to another exciting term ahead.”

David Hutson, Principal of Dwight School Dubai, noted: “It went well today; everyone is happy to be back, refreshed and ready to start term two.”

Students look forward to returning

At the same time, students were delighted to be back at school, just as the school was delighted to welcome them back then, with many saying “it feels great to be back at school today.”

Hind Abdalla Mohamed Fakhra Al Ali, a third-year student at GEMS Dubai Royal School, said: “I am so excited to be back at school and see my friends. I am part of the netball team and I am looking forward to [resuming] train! “

Aakash, a fourth grader, said: “I really enjoyed the winter break, [and] Got to see my cousins who came to visit me, but I’m also looking forward to going back to school and seeing my friends and teachers. Now that the cousins are gone and everyone is back to normal life, I’m looking forward to coming back.

The only problem is getting up early. This is something one especially misses after a long winter break. Having said that, I had a great day at school. “
