UAE, Singapore explore cooperation at 14th Abu Dhabi-Singapore Joint Forum

ABU DHABI – The 14th Abu Dhabi-Singapore Joint Forum (ADSJF) was held in Abu Dhabi yesterday and was co-chaired and attended by Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Bureau of Administrative Affairs, and S Iswaran, Minister of Singapore – Responsible for Trade Relations.

Also present at the forum were Sarah bint Yousef Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technologies, Chairman of the Emirates Schools Establishment (ESE) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Academy of Higher Education, and Director Majid Al Suwaidi, Ambassador-General and Special Representative of COP28, as well as representatives from Officials and senior representatives of some major public and private entities in the UAE and Singapore.

During the meeting, the co-chairs reaffirmed the strong bilateral relationship between the UAE and Singapore.

The UAE continues to be Singapore’s largest trading partner in the Middle East, with non-oil trade totaling US$4.1 billion in 2021.

The two sides also expressed interest in exploring cooperation in common areas of strategic importance, including innovation, technology, financial services, industry, skills development, climate change and food security.

Al Mubarak commented: “For more than a decade, the Abu Dhabi-Singapore Joint Forum has been an effective platform for public and private entities in the UAE and Singapore to develop productive partnerships in a range of areas of mutual interest. As part of the bilateral relations between the two countries , we look forward to further exploring and expanding our cooperation to benefit our businesses and people.”

Minister Iswaran in turn said, “As key business hubs in our respective regions, Singapore and the UAE share a common interest in fostering economic cooperation for the benefit of our business communities. We have made significant strides in innovation over the years, Trade digitization and fintech. I look forward to driving this partnership forward, focusing on fresh and forward-looking ideas such as low-carbon alternatives and food safety.”

The Emirates Institute of Higher Education and NIE International have signed a strategic partnership to collaborate in the education sector on governance and policy, training programs and capacity building for Emirati educators, with the aim of promoting exchanges in skills and knowledge development between the two countries.

Abu Dhabi’s global tech hub Hub71 and EnterpriseSG also signed a memorandum of understanding to support start-ups in both countries. Under the MOU, Hub71 and EnterpriseSG will jointly provide start-ups with a range of services, including mentoring, access to networking and resources, and cross-border collaboration opportunities.

For 35 years, the UAE and Singapore have actively cultivated a productive and positive bilateral relationship based on buoyant trade and investment. To expand cooperation, the Abu Dhabi-Singapore Joint Forum was established in 2007 as part of the two countries’ shared commitment to explore areas of mutual strategic interest.

In 2019, the two governments signed the Singapore-UAE Comprehensive Partnership (SUCP), a framework aimed at deepening existing areas of cooperation and exploring new areas of mutual benefit for both countries, such as trade, industry and investment, financial cooperation, education and manpower Resource development and sustainable development and energy.
