UAE Space Agency sheds light on significance of COP28

During the UAE Space Agency’s participation in the 66th session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) in Vienna, Austria, the agency organized a dinner sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Space Debate.

Senior officials and policymakers from COPUOS participating countries participated in the event, which took place during the UAE’s active participation in the 66th session of the Committee.

The occasion underscores the UAE’s commitment as it prepares to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai Expo City in November and December 2023.

The dinner served as a platform to highlight the importance of supporting global sustainable development efforts, in particular the role of the space sector in combating climate change and its relevance to COP28.

During COP28, policy makers are encouraged to engage in discussions on the challenges they face within the industry. In addition, the event highlighted the importance of strengthening international cooperation through the Abu Dhabi Space Debate Platform and highlighted the need to develop capabilities and conduct scientific research in this critical area.

The event was attended by Omran Sharaf, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Advanced Science and Technology and Chairman of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, Hamad Al-Kabi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, the UAE Ambassador to Austria, and the UAE Space Agency other senior officials and staff.

In his speech, Omran Sharaf said: “The Abu Dhabi Space Debate is a shared global platform that complements and accelerates space discussions. The aim is to bring together subject matter experts, senior decision industrial and commercial space sectors to mitigate and address current challenges in the space sector.”

In his speech, Hamad Al Kaabi said: “Our space program is based on scientific research. Therefore, we are committed to focusing on joint research. Organizational development and investment in youth, especially in science and engineering, are some of our key themes. we focus on.”

Salem Al Qubaisi said: “In an increasingly divided world, bridging perspectives is what brings humanity together. As we respond to the challenges of our time, it is important that we embrace our rich differences and seek common ground, especially in space. If we want to make real, tangible, and sustainable progress in space, joint cooperation among nations and space organizations must be at the forefront of our efforts so that we Challenge, create limitless potential in sustainable space, and pave the way for a prosperous future for the space industry.

The event featured an informational video about COP28, introducing the conference. In addition, presentations were delivered emphasizing the participation of the aerospace industry in the conference.

Notably, attention was drawn to the Spatial Data Hub, an advanced digital platform that allows stakeholders to access spatial data. The platform supports the development of innovative algorithms and solutions to national and global challenges.

The presentations also drew attention to a key partnership with Planet Labs, a recognized leader in Earth data and insights. The collaboration aims to develop a satellite data-driven atlas of loss and damage to contribute to global climate resilience efforts.
