UAE THAAD: New US Defence Support Strengthens Missile Shield
The UAE THAAD missile defence system is receiving renewed attention as the country strengthens its air and missile defence capabilities amid continuing regional security concerns.
The United Arab Emirates already operates THAAD as part of its wider defensive network. Lockheed Martin currently lists the UAE as one of THAAD’s two international operators, with two active UAE batteries.
THAAD, which stands for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, is designed to intercept short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. The system can engage incoming threats both inside and outside the atmosphere using hit-to-kill technology.
The UAE’s missile defence capabilities have expanded significantly in 2026. In March, the United States fast-tracked an $8.46 billion defence package for the UAE, including a major THAAD component worth about $4.5 billion, along with other air-defence and counter-drone systems.
The country has also previously demonstrated its ability to use THAAD in real-world conditions. In January 2022, UAE air defenders used the system to intercept incoming ballistic missiles, marking the first confirmed operational use of THAAD by an international customer.
The latest developments underline the UAE‘s focus on building layered protection for its cities, critical infrastructure and strategic facilities.
The growing cooperation with the United States also highlights the importance of missile defence in the UAE’s broader security strategy as regional threats continue to evolve.
