DUBAI: The UAE will play three one-day internationals against the West Indies in Sharjah next month as part of their preparations for Zimbabwe’s ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers.
Day and night races will take place on June 5th, 7th and 9th. Both teams will travel to Zimbabwe after the series for World Cup qualifiers starting June 18. The most important match will determine the remaining two places in India’s 10-team ICC Cricket World Cup in 2023.
Raising the profile of the UAE
Mubashshir Usmani, Secretary General of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), said: “We are delighted to host former world champions West Indies ahead of Zimbabwe qualifiers. Some blockbuster performances were produced in the ODI format which helped to raise the profile of UAE cricket.
“Our qualification for the tournament in Zimbabwe is a testament to our recent achievements. We want to ensure the best possible preparation for our team and this series will certainly help to achieve that. We look forward to welcoming West Indies.”
First bilateral visit
West Indies Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams said: “This is our first ever bilateral tour with the UAE and we are delighted to have agreed to this historic three ODI series as it will provide our players with A great opportunity to get some prep work ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers.
“It will also allow those players not going to Zimbabwe to gain some valuable international level experience in conditions abroad which will be of great benefit to their growth and development. We are delighted to be working closely with the ECB to arrange these three games, We see this as a partnership that can grow in the future.”
