Dubai, United Arab Emirates:- UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammad Al Mhaili, told delegates at the UN Security Council Ministerial Open Debate that the UAE plans to set up a Day of Relief, Recovery and Peace at the During the 28th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP28) Climate Change Conference.
In June, during the UAE’s presidency of the UN Security Council, a ministerial open debate on “Threats to International Peace and Security” was held in New York, USA. Chaired by Her Excellency Mariam Almheiri, it examines the impact of climate change on the roles and responsibilities of United Nations peacekeeping operations and special political missions. It also calls for a collaborative and responsive approach to address the urgent link between climate change and international peace and security.
HE Mariam Almheiri said: “At COP28 in Dubai later this year, the incoming UAE President plans to launch a day of ‘Relief, Recovery and Peace’. For the first time at any COP, the aim is to highlight The intersection of climate change, peace, and security—and presenting practical solutions to prevent and address the climate burden on stability.”
She added: “We are therefore advancing an ambitious agenda at COP28 to address the acute lack of accessible, affordable and adequate climate finance – especially for countries and communities experiencing humanitarian and security crises .In some cases, their per capita income is 80 times less than other developing countries, whose flows are already insufficient. As Chair, HE Mariam Almheiri said: “While the impacts of climate change on peace and security are varied and context-specific, they should not be ignored. The UAE most recently held the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council until June 2023. During its presidency and tenure on the Council, the UAE has worked to elevate the multifaceted issues of climate change.
The UAE also co-chairs the Security Council Informal Expert Group on Climate, Peace and Security. It has named 2023 the Year of Sustainable Development and will host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in November 2023.
