Many Emirati motorists think radar only catches speeding cars – little do they know that the latest technology in these devices can also detect several other violations, including not wearing a seat belt.

Those found breaking the rules face not only hefty fines, but also months in jail. Some vehicles even end up in public auctions.

Here is a list of the 8 most common traffic violations for which penalties can be imposed in the UAE:

1. Speeding

This is one of the main traffic violations that radar can detect. In all emirates except Abu Dhabi, radars are set at 20km/h above the prescribed speed limit. This means that on a 100km/h road, if a motorist is traveling at 121km/h or more, the radar will register speeding.

Speeding traffic fines range from Dh300 to Dh3,000, depending on how fast the motorist is speeding.

According to UAE traffic law, anyone who exceeds the speed limit by 80 km/h will be fined 23 points and impounded for 60 days.

2. Expired vehicles

Driving a vehicle with an expired registration is subject to a Dh500 fine and 4 demerit points, according to federal traffic rules. If overdue for more than three months, the vehicle will be impounded for seven days.

3. Noisy vehicles

Some motorists illegally modify their vehicles to increase speed. These vehicles will make panic noises and are intended to intimidate.

Sharjah Police has installed radar that can detect noisy vehicles. Powered by solar technology, it can alert police if more than one car is making noise on the same road (indicating racing).

Any vehicle caught making noise above 95 decibels will be fined Dh2,000. The federal traffic law also provides 12 black points for driving a noisy vehicle.

4. Playing with mobile phones while driving

Abu Dhabi Police has an automated system to detect motorists using mobile phones or not wearing seat belts while driving. The system captures high-resolution images through AI-powered cameras.

The fine for using a mobile phone while driving is Dh800 and 4 black points.

5. Seat belt violations

The fine for not wearing a seat belt is Dh400 plus 4 black points.

6. Trailing

Some radars in the UAE detect and penalize tailgating. Umm Al Quwain police activated radar last year to detect traffic violations. Abu Dhabi Police had earlier implemented a similar smart system.

Failure to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front will result in a fine of AED 400 and 4 demerit points.

7. Running a red light

Radar installed at signalized intersections can detect cars running red lights, even those making wrong turns or U-turns from restricted areas.

Penalties for running a red light are a Dh1,000 fine, 12 demerit points and 30-day confiscation of the vehicle.

8. Unauthorized road racing

Dh50,000 fine for participating in unauthorized road racing
