In a month’s time, Dubai will be home to the world’s largest gem-quality ruby ever discovered.

Fura Gems Inc unveiled the stunning 101-carat Mozambican gem at the Dubai Diamond Exchange at DMCC on Wednesday.

The rare rough pigeon’s blood ruby, named Estrela de Fura (star of Fura in Portuguese), will remain in the emirate before a private auction in October. Not everyone can see it, though, as it’s only available by appointment.

“We are very pleased to have discovered Estrela de Fura, the largest gem-quality ruby ever mined in the world. After more than two years of production, Fura has proven its provenance in Mozambique,” said Dev Shetty, founder and CEO of Fura Gems. The ruby mine is a world-class deposit.

“This discovery is an unprecedented event and a moment of honor for us in Fura and Mozambique.”

High-quality rubies – with their vivid red hue, unique fluorescence and clarity – are said to be extremely rare.

The finest rubies have been synonymous with Mogok, Myanmar for centuries, but the discovery of Estrela de Fura has brought Mozambique into focus as a source of rare gem-quality crystals.

A gem that can set a world record

One expert described the ruby as “the most important and promising gemstone” he has tested in his career.

Dr. A. Peretti, owner and CEO of GRS GemResearch Swisslab, said: “This ruby has characteristics usually only found in the classic Mogok mines in Myanmar. It has a fluorescent and vivid red color, and even has an outstanding Cleaness.”

He added: “Estrela de Fura offers the potential to set a new world record as the highest quality gem-quality ruby ever discovered, measuring over 50 carats once it has gone through the final cutting process.”

Shetty said they chose to unveil the rare gem in Dubai because the emirate is their “birthplace”.

“Our DMCC in Dubai gave birth to Fura, and it had to start here. Our headquarters is here. This is an iconic day not only for us, but for Mozambique, DMCC, Dubai and my hometown in Mozambique. . We operate,” he added.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of DMCC, added: “DMCC has played an important role in strengthening the emirate as a global trading hub, especially in gemstones. We are proud to partner with Fura to launch the world’s largest diamond exchange on the Dubai Diamond Exchange. Gem-quality rubies; yet another example of Dubai’s pivotal role in the global gemstone industry.”
