Sharm El Sheikh – Egypt: – The UAE has launched a national net zero by 2050 as part of its participation in the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in the Egyptian city of Sharm El Sheikh from 6 to 18 November Emissions pathway, which sets the time frame and defines the mechanism to implement the UAE Net Zero Strategic Initiative by 2050, launched in October 2021.

Announcing the news, Climate Change and Environment Minister Mariam Bint Mohammad Almhri said: “Climate change is the most serious threat to humanity as it affects not only us but the food and drink we eat and drink. Following the launch of the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative at Expo 2020 Dubai in October 2021, the country has established the UAE Climate Action Council, led by the Minister of Climate Change and Environment and comprising representatives from 23 public and private sector entities , as a national umbrella for climate action. It also established the National Committee to Develop a National Net Zero Strategy to 2050, which is responsible for developing a long-term net zero strategy.
Strategy formulation consists of two stages. The first phase, completed in September 2022, defines a national net-zero emissions pathway to 2050. This phase includes benchmarking to identify best practices in similar and developed countries in the field, establish emissions baselines, and assess the impact of existing national strategies (energy, water, demand management, waste, industry) on emissions reductions up to 2050 , developing models for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and conducting modeling exercises, developing lists of priority mitigation measures, and developing scenarios to achieve net-zero emissions.
Using state-of-the-art methods, several scenarios have been considered for a national net-zero path to 2050. The selected scenarios represent a diverse and balanced path. It needs to accelerate the implementation of economically viable mitigation measures, with a focus on promoting a green economy and driving the transition to green industry, thereby increasing exports and protecting key mature industries (aluminum, steel, cement and oil and gas). Thus, this option balances environmental and climate impacts on the one hand, and socio-economic impacts on the other. It is also expected to meet the requirement to keep global warming below 2°C, preferably 1.5°C – the main goal of the Paris Agreement.
As part of this scenario, the UAE will take steps to mitigate climate change, such as increasing the share of clean energy in its energy mix and expanding the use of clean electricity in various sectors including heavy industry. The use of fossil fuels will be gradually reduced in accordance with the principles of a fair energy transition. These measures also include expanding natural and industrial-based carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) systems, focusing on direct air capture (DAC) technologies and ocean-based solutions, in addition to supporting climate-smart transport.
The pathway is expected to increase the country’s GDP by 1.8% to 3.2% by 2050, with a total increase of between AED610 billion and AED1,080 billion compared to 2019. It will also create and maintain an average of 200,000 jobs annually.
On the other hand, the pathway will help significantly improve air quality due to reduced pollution from industry, energy and traffic. This will have a positive impact on public health and strengthen the country’s competitive advantage in low-carbon exports.
A national net-zero emissions pathway to 2050 will increase transparency and increase the UAE’s chances of successfully meeting the national goal of limiting global warming to 1.5-2°C under the Paris Agreement.
