Suhail Bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, on Tuesday revealed details of the UAE Cabinet-approved update to the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and the development of the National Hydrogen Strategy to strengthen the country’s efforts to achieve its goals by 2050 climate and net zero commitments.

Speaking at a media briefing organized by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), Al Mazrouai said: “Through these two strategies, we aim to shape a prosperous, climate-secure, energy-secure future for our country , while contributing to the global agenda for environmental sustainability. Our goal is to produce 1.4 million tons of hydrogen by 2031.”

“These strategies support the goals of the ‘We UAE 2031’ Vision, Circular Economy Policy 2031, National Wellbeing Strategy 2031 and the UAE Net Zero Emissions Strategy Initiative 2050. According to the latest goals of the UAE’s 2050 energy strategy, the country will invest 15-200 billion dirhams by 2030 to ensure that energy needs are met while maintaining the UAE’s economic growth. The strategy aims to increase the efficiency of individual and institutional energy consumption to reduce carbon emissions and enhance environmental sustainability. This will help achieve financial savings of AED 100 billion by 2030 and create 50,000 new green jobs.

Al Mazrouei added: “The UAE is a shining example of adopting policies and strategies that help shape a more sustainable future both domestically and globally. We have taken on the task of updating the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 to accelerate the energy transition , increase the share of clean energy in the energy mix, achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and help achieve our vision for sustainable development. The strategy outlines a national plan to balance meeting growing energy needs with providing for future generations Sustaining natural resources for future generations. It aims to stimulate a clean energy boom and enable a robust energy transition as a lever of the national economy and a major contributor to the country’s GDP.”

Al Mazrouei further emphasized that, as one of the first countries in the region to ratify the Paris Agreement and host of COP28, the UAE is committed to joining forces with the international community to drive collective action to limit global warming.

Speaking about the National Hydrogen Strategy, Al Mazrouei explained: “This is a long-term plan to turn the UAE into a leading and reliable low-carbon hydrogen producer and supplier by 2031. The strategy is to help the UAE develop Important tool. Delivering on the promise of net-zero emissions by 2050 and accelerating the development of a global hydrogen economy.”

Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy, said: “By updating the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, we seek to increase the deployment of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency, in line with our firm Commitment to the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The strategy includes several initiatives to promote the deployment of solar and nuclear energy, drive R&D and innovation in renewable energy technologies, and encourage local and international companies to invest in the country’s renewable energy. field of renewable energy.”

He added: “The updated UAE Energy Strategy 2050 will place the UAE at the forefront of the global energy transition. It will support the goal of achieving a grid emission factor of 0.27 kg CO2/kWh (below the global average) by 2030 , to achieve net-zero emissions from the energy and water sectors by 2050. This will also help the UAE to more than triple its share of renewable energy by 2030, keep it on track Increase the share of clean energy installed capacity in the total energy mix to 30% by 2030.”

Commenting on the National Hydrogen Strategy, Al Al Olamah said: “It involves the establishment of two hydrogen oases and the exploration of three future hydrogen oases with tangible steps to strengthen the UAE as a reliable producer of clean energy by increasing hydrogen production capacity and supplier status. The strategy helps foster domestic markets, develop regulatory frameworks and policies that support hydrogen as a sustainable fuel of the future, strengthen regional cooperation, and increase investment in research and development.”

He noted that the strategy, which emphasizes the importance of economic growth, will help create thousands of jobs in the hydrogen industry by 2050, in addition to reducing emissions in hard-to-abate industries such as heavy industry, land transport, aviation and shipping. Freight traffic will increase by 25% by 2031.

In 2017, the UAE launched the Energy Strategy 2050, the country’s first unified energy strategy based on supply and demand. Working with all stakeholders, the strategy has been updated following its initial review to take into account developments in the energy sector and ensure access to reliable, sustainable and affordable energy.
