UAE weather, Stay Alert: Yellow Warnings for Dust, Wind, and Rough Seas

UAE is bracing for a spell of challenging weather as yellow alerts have been issued for dust, wind, and rough seas.

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has issued these warnings to alert residents and visitors of the potential hazards associated with these weather conditions. The anticipated dust storms, driven by strong winds, are expected to sweep across various regions, significantly reducing visibility in UAE . As a result, motorists are advised to drive slowly and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles to mitigate the risk of accidents. The reduced visibility on the roads can create dangerous driving conditions, and the use of headlights even during the day is recommended to improve visibility.

The strong winds, which can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h, are expected to exacerbate the dust conditions in UAE .

These winds pose a risk to outdoor activities and structures. Loose objects such as garden furniture, umbrellas, and signage should be secured to prevent them from being blown away. Construction sites are also advised to take precautionary measures to ensure that equipment and materials are safely stored. Along with the dust and wind, rough sea conditions are predicted, particularly in the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Wave heights could reach up to 2.5 meters, making maritime activities hazardous. Small boats and other vessels are advised to avoid venturing out to sea during this period. UAE Coastal residents and beachgoers should also be cautious, as strong currents and high waves can pose significant dangers.

UAE Health authorities are urging people, especially those with respiratory conditions, to take extra precautions during the dusty weather. Exposure to high levels of dust can aggravate conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. It is recommended to stay indoors as much as possible and keep windows and doors closed to prevent dust from entering homes. Wearing masks can also help filter out dust particles when going outside is necessary. The dust and wind conditions are expected to be transient, with improvements anticipated in the following days. However, the public is advised to stay updated with the latest weather reports from the NCM and adhere to any additional safety advisories issued by local authorities.

The NCM continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide regular updates to ensure that UAE residents are well-informed. As part of their advisory, they emphasize the importance of preparedness and vigilance during these challenging weather conditions. The combination of dust, strong winds, and rough seas presents a multifaceted threat, requiring a coordinated response from both individuals and community services. In preparation for these weather conditions, it is helpful to know a bit more about the science behind them.

Dust storms occur when strong winds lift and carry large amounts of dust and sand, reducing visibility and air quality. These storms can be particularly severe in desert regions where loose, dry soil is abundant. The strong winds that drive these storms are typically associated with weather systems such as low-pressure areas or cold fronts.

In the case of rough seas, strong winds can generate large waves and powerful currents, making maritime activities dangerous. Wave heights can increase rapidly, and the choppy water conditions can pose a threat to small boats and other vessels. Coastal areas can also be affected by strong waves and currents, which can lead to coastal erosion and pose risks to beachgoers. For those who must travel or be outdoors during this period, it is important to take precautions to ensure safety.

UAE  Motorists should reduce speed, use headlights, and maintain a safe following distance on the roads. Pedestrians should avoid walking near large trees or structures that could be affected by strong winds. In addition, securing loose objects around homes and businesses can help prevent them from becoming airborne and causing damage.
