United Arab Emirates (UAE) astronaut Sultan al-Neyadi He will become the first Arab astronaut to perform a spacewalk on April 28, state news agency WAM reported on Thursday.

Al-Neyadi is currently on the International Space Station (ISS) Longest Arab space mission to date, Astronauts will use spacewalks — when astronauts leave a spacecraft or space station — to help maintain and update the ISS, according to WAM.

The spacewalk — which al-Neyadi will do with NASA flight engineer Stephen Bowen — will last about six and a half hours.

Astronauts selected for spacewalks on the International Space Station “go through a rigorous selection process” and need to be able to demonstrate “extraordinary abilities” in various fields, including engineering, robotics and life support systems, WAM said.

Al-Neyadi trained for the spacewalk for more than 55 hours at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Al-Neyadi launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on March 2 as part of a six-month mission that will carry out everything from growing human cells in space to controlling combustible objects in microgravity. Materials and other series of experiments.

Al-Neyadi, 41, is the second person from his country to fly into space and the first to launch from U.S. soil as part of a long-duration space station team.
