Infinity Power Holding, a joint venture between United Arab Emirates renewable energy company Masdar and Egypt’s Infinity, announced on Tuesday that its solar photovoltaic (PV) plant developed in Sharm El Sheikh is now fully operational – ready to provide clean, renewable energy COP27, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, was held in the Egyptian city.

Abu Dhabi-based Masdar has invested in wind and solar projects in 40 countries around the world. In Egypt, a new 6-megawatt (MWp) power plant – capable of generating up to 11,723 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy per year, enough to power more than 5,000 homes while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 4,000 tons – will continue according to national news Agency WAM reports that the conference will operate after the meeting to provide the city with clean energy for years to come.

Before COP27, two other solar power plants of the same size were developed.

Dr Sultan bin Ahmed al-Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Special Envoy for Climate Change and Chairman of Masdar, said, “Masdar is rapidly growing and is the partner of choice for many of Egypt’s most important clean energy projects, and I am proud that we Ability to support COP27 by providing clean energy through our Infinity Power platform. The United Arab Emirates and Egypt share a commitment to expanding renewable energy supplies and supporting sustainable economic growth. “

Masdar chief executive Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said COP27 represented “a significant opportunity to translate positive rhetoric into impactful action”.

He added: “We must therefore do everything we can to reduce its carbon footprint and show the world a sustainable solution. This solar power plant will help provide clean energy for the conference and will provide Sham for years to come. The people of Sheikh provide a legacy of sustainable development.”

Mohamed Ismail Mansour, Chairman of Infinity Power, said: “We are delighted to support COP27 in Egypt by providing solutions based on clean, renewable energy. We will continue to provide Sharm el-Sheikh with our solar power plant. Sustainable energy solutions to provide clean energy to a city that plays an important role in Egypt’s diplomacy and international relations.”

Infinity Power has been named a key partner at COP27, established in 2020 to generate electricity through renewable energy projects, including utility and industrial-scale solar and wind technologies in Egypt and Africa. With current projects in Egypt, South Africa, Senegal and Ghana, Infinity Power aims to eventually expand its operations to all 54 African countries, providing power to all of Africa’s most power-hungry regions.

Masdar, one of the fastest-growing renewable energy companies in the world, is targeting a portfolio of 100 gigawatts (GW) of capacity by 2030 and hopes to double it over the next few years. In December 2021, the UAE government announced that Abu Dhabi energy champions TAQA, ADNOC and Mubadala will join Masdar as shareholders to create a global clean energy powerhouse that will become a major force in renewable energy and green hydrogen.
